Is there any truth to this story about the reason why the Star Spangled banner wasn't our anthem?

A substitute teacher told my son the reason why the Star Spangled banner wasn't our national anthem until 1931 was because of its original lyrics. It orginally was "land of the free, and the home of the slave." It wasn't until after WWI that the lyrics were changed and only then was it declared the national anthem.
