Overall effects of volcanoes.?

Volcanoes erupt tonnes of Sulpher and carbon dioxide and monoxide. Obvious green house ges. Everyone knows that greenhouse gases increase the earths temperature slowly by reflecting outgoing radiation. However many eruptions have cooled the earth, via blocking incoming radiation. My question is simply: do the effects of volcanoes have a net warming or net cooling effect and around when is this switch around?
