Magic can be used in or outside of battle depending on if you are controlling a White Mage, Black Mage or a Red Mage. You can use the inn or buy ethers in the shop and if a character dies, there is building where you pay ridiculous amount of gil to revive them, using a Phoenix down can revive characters or use magic such as Raise.
